On learning of the existence of the sea mouse
They are small but they are numerous. The further we walk, the more we see. Why have we not seen them before, these curious forms washed ashore on last night’s storm? Among the flotsam some still twitch in their final throes, smooth segmented undersides exposed. Others show their bristled backs, muddied grey, but a closer look reveals a glimmer of occult beauty. They are edged with iridescence, rescued from the grotesque by a green-gold shimmer. I am mesmerised by the spectacle of this enigma I cannot name strewn across a familiar coast I thought I knew so well. Were this described to me, I might doubt it to be true, but I witness it and I am cast under a spell of wonder. Later I learn that these creatures are commonplace, but to me they retain a deep mystery. They have always lived near us and we never knew.
The kibblemeister says the reason these are rarely seen on the Norfolk/Suffolk coast is because the sea in that region contains lots of catfish and they are very good mousers. When I asked about your sighting he said that it must have been dogfish season, when the catfish are all too scared to hunt. I THINK he is probably lying, but either way he is a niddyet, as any fule kno.
I've never seen a sea mouse but would like to. Are they edible? <3 Hattie xx
